Ebrahim Abad Qanat in Iran
Being situated on the arid belt of the planet, a lot of Iran’s central provinces
are always struggling with water deficiency. A problem as old as the country’s
heritage and not just relevant today. The rainfall deficit and high evaporation
rates in provinces such as Markazi, South Khorasan, Yazd,
Kerman, Sistan and
Baluchestan, etc. … have forced Iranians to consider launching a system with
which water could be stored with the least amount of waste. So, qanats were born
and were known to be Iranians’ most important technological invention.
Ebrahim Abad qanat in the Markazi province which is nearly 800 years old and
belongs to the 14th and 15th centuries has captured UNESCO’s attention due to
its conical shape and its direct impact on the economy and the life of the
district’s inhabitants. Ebrahim Abad qanat emanates from Haftad Qolle
Mountains and after passing through an 11 kilometers westward route, reaches the
Ebrahim Abad village. For years this qanat has provided the village’s farms with
water and also has helped the development of this rural area equipped with
relative facilities such as cisterns and bathhouses, and on top of that it has
irrigated the village’s orchards as well.

The Travel Guide to Visit Ebrahim Abad Qanat in Iran
To get to this qanat, passing through Salafchegan – Arak highway, Ebrahim Abad
village’s sign could be seen and 30 kilometers after the village, the qanat
itself could be sighted. Currently, it is only possible to visit the outside of
the qanat which is free of charge, but in the vicinity of this globally
registered qanat, there is a historical bathhouse and cistern which is fun to
visit. This village cannot facilitate overnight stay for tourists but in two
hours, one can cover the whole village and enjoy its attractions.
Ebrahim Abad is not just famous for its globally registered qanat. It should be
noted that the only place in which Tabaq Halva, a traditional food of the area,
is made is this village. This food is cooked on 29th of Ramadan and is made from
flour, oil, rose water, grape syrup, cinnamon, coriander, sesame seeds, cardamom
seeds and Damask rose.
What has made this traditional food famous is the use of grape syrup instead of
water and sugar. Quite surprisingly, grape syrup cannot be readily found in the
village, and to attain it one should go to a nearby town called Khorzan
approximately 4 kilometers north of Ebrahim Abad.
