Yazd is located right at the center of Iran. Yazd is the only city in Iran and one of the few cities in the world which is inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. You might ask what does this city under the perpetual glow of harsh desert sun has to deserve such a huge honor. Well, conventional wisdom has it that creativity blossoms under severe circumstances and that is especially true of Yazd’s unique architecture. Aside from that, scarcity of water resources led the Persians to the design and construction of intricate subterranean channels for drawing water called “Qanat” around the first millennium BC. Numerous examples of this novel invention of ancient Iranians are found around Yazd, some of which are still functional and used by the local farmers. Another aspect of Yazd that has earned the city international acclaim is its “windcatchers”. The term is a literal translation of the Persian term Badgir and refers to long column-like structures used widely in old Iranian architecture for the purpose of letting the cool air circulate freely inside the building; hence a natural ventilator. This architectural element is ubiquitous in Yazd and explains its famous nickname, “The City of Windcatchers”.
